I originally started to blog for a few reasons (to give clients and idea of who I am, to document my progress, etc.) and it just hit me that I’m not doing a very good job of it. I’m not completely saddened by this, because the things that I AM doing instead of blogging are so important. I wanted to take some time today to let you know what I’ve been up to. I’m going to apologize in advance for such a messy post. Maybe I should try bullets. :)
* Networking, networking, and more networking: It’s been one the best things for my business, as well as for my soul. When you love something, a great way to love it more is to surround yourself with other people who love it. (Are you picking up what I’m laying down?) In December, I reached out to a photographer here in Nashville who invited me to a monthly meet-up with some of the best photographers around. Since then, things have just snowballed into something amazing. I’m attending photographers’ meetings at least twice a month and getting so much out of it. It’s nice have a place where you can go and talk to your peers about what works, what doesn’t work, and what you’re going to make work if it’s the last thing you do! Not only have I been attending those meetings, there’s also the occasional seminar, afternoon lunch, or late-night dinners. I always leave with my brain spinning and my cheeks hurting.
*Upgrading my equipment: I recently purchased a new Canon 7D and I’m loving it so far. I would like to make the jump to a full-frame camera, but it will come with time. I’ve also been stocking up on prime lenses and almost have the full arsenal that I “need”. Basically, I’ve upgraded everything that I was shooting with when I started my business last April. I even have a cute JoTotes bag and Shootsac to carry it all in style. :)
* Charity work: As you’ve seen on my blog, I was one of the photographers for the Hope, Faith, & Photos for a Cure event. I also just photographed the 13th Annual Mardi Gras Ball for the Genesis House. Both of those events were so much fun and I was honored to be able to help.
* Sampling different album and product companies: One of my goals for this year is to offer a variety of fabulous products for you to choose from. This would include different types of prints, albums, canvases, and other small and fun items. I’ve been narrowing down the companies that I will be working with, and I can’t wait to share some of the new and exciting things I’ll be offering.
*Booking!! I’m so glad to say that 2011 looks like it’s going to be the year I had hoped it would be. I’ve been booking everything from newborn sessions to weddings, birthday parties to fashion shoots, and much more. I still have a long way to go to build Erin Smagala Photography up to where it can be, but I’m loving every minute of it.
*Last but not least, photographing some of the best clients ever: January-April is usually a slow time in this industry for shooting. I’m glad to have the time to focus on my full-time job and husband, but I love the occasional sessions that have come my way. I will be blogging about sweet Marley’s session soon! Right now I need to go prepare for tomorrow’s wedding. I will be assisting my friend Anna from Photography by Anna Rebecca. It looks like there will be quite a few blogs coming your way!
